In the Subaru Solterra, a child restraint system for infants or small children must be properly secured using the lap portion of the lap/shoulder seat belt. Correct installation is essential to ensure that the system provides effective protection in all driving conditions.
■ Installing child restraint system using a seat belt (child restraint lock function belt)
Always install the child restraint system in the Subaru Solterra according to the detailed instructions provided by the manufacturer of the restraint system, in addition to the guidance outlined in this manual.
■ Rear-facing - Infant seat/convertible seat
1. Adjust the rear seat.
If there is any gap between the child restraint system and the seatback of your Subaru Solterra, adjust the seatback angle until the system fits firmly and evenly against the seat.
2. Place the child restraint system on the rear seat facing the rear of the vehicle.
3. Route the seat belt through the designated path on the child restraint system and insert the latch plate into the buckle. Ensure that the belt is not twisted during installation.
4. Fully extend the shoulder belt and allow it to retract, activating the locking mode. In this mode, the belt cannot extend, ensuring a secure hold.
5. While pressing the child restraint system firmly into the rear seat of the Subaru Solterra, allow the shoulder belt to retract fully until the system is tightly secured.
After removing all slack from the belt, gently pull it to confirm that it remains locked and does not extend.
6. After installation, firmly rock the child restraint system back and forth to confirm that it is securely anchored in the Subaru Solterra.
■ Forward-facing - Convertible seat
1. Adjust the seat.
When installing in the front passenger seat of the Subaru Solterra (only if unavoidable), follow the proper seat adjustment guidelines described earlier.
When installing in the rear seat, ensure that the seatback provides firm contact with the child restraint system.
2. If the head restraint interferes with installation and can be removed, remove it to allow proper positioning.
3. Place the child restraint system on the seat facing forward.
4. Route the seat belt through the child restraint system and secure it in the buckle, ensuring the belt remains untwisted.
5. Extend the shoulder belt fully and allow it to retract into locking mode to hold the child restraint system firmly in place.
6. Press the child restraint system firmly into the seat while allowing the belt to retract until it is tightly secured.
Check that the belt remains locked by attempting to pull it outward.
7. If the system includes a top tether strap, attach it securely to the designated anchor point according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
8. Confirm installation by rocking the child restraint system to ensure stability in the Subaru Solterra.
■ Booster seat
1. If installation in the front passenger seat is unavoidable, adjust the seat according to Subaru Solterra safety guidelines.
2. High back type: If the head restraint interferes, remove or reposition it as necessary.
3. Place the booster seat on the seat facing forward.

4. Seat the child and secure the seat belt according to the child restraint system manufacturer’s instructions. Ensure the belt is not twisted and is correctly routed.
Verify that the shoulder belt crosses the center of the child’s shoulder and that the lap belt rests low across the hips.
■ Removing a child restraint system installed with a seat belt
Press the buckle release button and allow the seat belt to retract completely.
When releasing the buckle, hold the child restraint system firmly, as it may move suddenly due to seat cushion rebound.
Allow the seat belt to retract slowly into its stowed position to prevent damage.
WARNING
■ When installing a child restraint system
Follow these critical safety precautions when installing a child restraint system in the Subaru Solterra.
Failure to do so may result in serious injury or death.
If this occurs and the buckle cannot be released, cut the belt immediately using appropriate tools.
The belt should fit snugly across the shoulder and low on the hips without obstruction.
■ When installing a booster seat
To prevent the seat belt from entering ALR locking mode, avoid fully extending the shoulder belt during installation. ALR mode may tighten the belt excessively, causing discomfort or injury to the child in the Subaru Solterra.
Additional safety note: Proper installation of child restraint systems in the Subaru Solterra ensures that all safety technologies function together effectively, providing maximum protection for young passengers in all driving conditions.
