Subaru Solterra 2023-2026 Owner's Manual: If the EV system will not start

If your Subaru Solterra does not power on as expected, the underlying cause can vary depending on environmental conditions, system status, or component functionality. Carefully review the following scenarios and apply the appropriate solution to restore operation safely and efficiently.

The EV system will not start even though the correct starting procedure is being followed

In the Subaru Solterra, several factors may prevent the EV system from activating despite proper operation:

• The charging cable may still be connected to the Subaru Solterra, which prevents system startup as a safety measure.
• The electronic key may not be detected or may be malfunctioning due to low battery or signal interference.*
• The traction battery may be fully discharged.

  Recharge the traction battery of the Subaru Solterra before attempting to start the system again.

• A malfunction may exist within the immobilizer system, preventing authorization of startup.*
• There could be an issue with the shift control system, restricting proper gear position recognition.*
• The Subaru Solterra EV system may be affected by an electrical fault, such as a depleted key battery or a blown fuse. In some cases, temporary procedures may allow the system to start.
• The traction battery temperature may be extremely low (approximately below -22ºF [-30ºC]), which can temporarily disable system activation.

*: In such cases, shifting out of the P position may not be possible.

The interior lights and headlights are dim, or the horn does not sound or sounds weak

Possible causes in the Subaru Solterra include:

• The 12-volt auxiliary battery may be discharged or weakened.
• The battery terminals may be loose, oxidized, or improperly connected.

The interior lights and headlights do not turn on, or the horn does not sound

In this situation, consider the following:

• The 12-volt battery in the Subaru Solterra may be completely discharged.
• One or both battery terminals may be disconnected, interrupting power supply.

Starting the EV system in an emergency

If the Subaru Solterra EV system fails to start under normal conditions, the following emergency procedure may allow temporary activation, provided the power switch is functioning correctly.

This method should only be used in urgent situations and not as a routine starting method.

1. Engage the parking brake securely.

2. Turn the power switch to the ACC position.*

3. While firmly pressing the brake pedal, press and hold the power switch for approximately 15 seconds.

Even if the Subaru Solterra starts using this method, it may indicate an underlying system fault requiring inspection.

If you lose your keys
